Twist of Fate pre-planning
So this is an idea I’ve been mulling around and trying to decide if it was a good enough idea to share or go through with. It’s something I wanted to try and do to bring some life back into this place as well as give a chance at nostalgia to some of our more senior, and now significantly busier, members.
And since I’m pretty much a one-trick pony this idea is; you guessed it. A Role Play.
This idea isn’t entirely formed and I think I like it that way.
Essentially the idea is; the DC universe, with less focus on the superheroes and more focus on the magic and mystery side of the universe.
I intend to play characters such as Dr. Fate, Deadman and Jason Blood in the role of advising/training the player characters with the actual focus of the training varying based on the backgrounds of the player characters; lots of Fairies, more fairy-oriented story, lots of demon-spawn, more demon-oriented story.
I want to try and orient the storyline toward whatever the Player Characters are oriented toward. One thing to note; Robin/Batman type characters, going to be useless, Kryptonian/alien type characters, going to be pretty useless too. I’m looking to try and help us get away from the ‘typical’ hero types, less Superman and more Dr. Fate, less Batman and more Etrigan. Less Justice League and more Justice League Dark.
One of the things I did want to do was to help integrate the Player Character into the world; and get a personal feel for them by doing origin stories with each of the PC, the players get to write their character’s own origin story, but I’ll play it out with them, with possible changes being, replacing original NPCs with Canon character I know of who would fit the same role. Personalities of NPCs might also be changed from what the player imagines because frankly; if I’m going to be playing I’m going to play them my way. That’s just the price of having a personalized origin story; I figure we’ll make you your own thread and go from your boring civilian life to some vague point after your first mission is settled where someone like Dr. Fate or Jason Blood, someone who’s tapped into the Supernatural pulse and we can get you started in the main game.
I did figure I would only do 4-6 origin stories at a time however. So it’ll be first come first serve.
Throwing this up to see if there was any interest, or ya'know life.
Because I am busy with work and various other things I did figure there would only be maybe a one post in two weeks requirement. I'll try to post more than that as the GM but that might just be once a week on weekends. This is both because I have work and life and because I want to encourage our busier members to post when they're able to. I know there's plenty of us out there who would still like to RP, even though we have responsibilities to attend to.

Of course I'm all in, if you are encouraging original characters, this would be a great opp for me to finally use Arthur. I am indeed very interested in this.

Arthur
- Spoiler:
- “Even if my father came back, I would still choose to fight crime.”Name: Arthur James Fox
Alias: None
Age: 18
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 160lbs
Hair: Short Brown
Skin: White
Eyes: Blue
Alignment: Good
Attire: Three-piece suit.
Ethnicity: British
Race: Homo Magi
Abilities
Backwards Magic
Arthur can perform a variety of offensive backwards-magic spells. They range from binding, shocks, sensations, and suggestions. All spells last for five seconds at the most, shocks only last for one second, suggestions can be resisted if the holder of the mind is strong enough; backwards-magic spells must be pronounced clearly in order for the spell to take effect, a gag will effectively halt any of these spells. Arthur must also gesture with his hands and body in the direction in which he wound like to cast the spell; otherwise the spell would have little or no effect. He must have a decent amount of focus when casting it upon a foe and must be at least fifteen feet in range for the spell to be effective. The spell must not exceed five syllables, otherwise the spell backfires and Arthur will be incapacitated in casting all spells for one hour at the least.
Focus Magic
Focus-magic does not require any chants in order to cast and it can never backfire. The only thing that is necessary for a focus-magic spell to work is for the wielder to have his focus dead set on his target. The spells include materializing objects, pushes, telekinesis, and manipulating sound waves. Focus-magic spells are significantly weaker and require more focus coupled with a stronger gesture. Because of the nature of focus-magic, they also have a shorter duration period and must be cast in a ten-foot range.
Defensive Spells
Shields and shortly lived force fields can be waved from his hand in order to block a number of various attacks. Shields come and go and can only take up to 500 lbs of pressure. He can create a barrier around his body to act as armor but can only take up to 100 lbs of pressure. It’s most effective in knife fights or fistfights.
Slight of Hand
Not only experienced in mystical magic, Arthur is also experienced in physical earthly magic. One of the useful magic tricks he adopts is the slight of hand. He can use this technique to disarm foes without them realizing it. This includes discarding magazines, taking off armor, pick pocketing, and a number of useful disarming techniques as well as offensive maneuvers. The only downside is that he obviously must be point blank to perform any slight of hand techniques to his targets.
Physical Abilities
Standard Stamina
Arthur has an average level endurance. He is physically fit, but not to superhuman ranks.
Mental Abilities
Advanced Mental Concentration
Because of the nature of his abilities, Arthur has a keen sense of mental stabilization. He can be malnourished for three days and maintain a healthy mental state of mind, despite how his physical health diminishes. Trauma or physical abuse will affect his ability of concentration.
Tools
9mm Handgun
The fifteen round M9 rests on Arthur’s right hip. It weighs around 2.5 lbs and is only used for emergencies. His girlfriend Azalea purchased it for him to guard him in case anything was to happen. He only carries it around to ease her paranoia and has no intent on ever using it.
Kevlar Vest
Bulletproof, the vest only covers his front and back, but not his sides. Arthur also uses it to store and deploy other offensive attacks.
Optic Camo
Also known as active camouflage, Arthur’s military grade camouflage makes Arthur nearly invisible by using a countless amount of cameras to display an image from behind. Used for offensive and defensive attacks, though if he moves around too much or if he has some part of his body exposed from the optic camo, he’s easily noticeable.
Weakness
Higher-leveled Magics
Because Arthur still has much to learn about his powers as a homo magi, if he fights someone who is more experienced in magic than he, it’s impossible for him to win the battle.
Backfire
All of Arthur’s spells can backfire at any moment if improperly cast, even if it was a slight imperfection and can have the opposite effect of what he was aiming for.
Mnemonic Incantation and Gesture Disability
If for whatever reason Arthur cannot speak or make a magical gesture by being gagged or bound, he cannot cast any spells.
Origin
Arthur James Fox was born and raised in a family of homo magi, they practiced their art and continued to stay in the world and live as normal human beings. Arthur’s father joined the army before he was born to support the family only as a recruitment officer for the US Marine Corps. Arthur became best friends with Azalea Parker who was the daughter of a coworker of his father. Arthur enjoyed performing magic for Azalea.
In their teen years became romantically involved and both of their fathers went out for a European Tour of Duty. Arthur’s father never came back, his unit was attacked by an unidentified meta-human who was believed to be looking for Justice League Members in Kasina. The military death gratuity didn’t last Fox’s family for very long and they needed to move to survive, in this case, they moved to Hub City. Arthur’s mother found a job as a waitress, and Arthur schooled himself after familiarizing himself with the neighborhood.
Arthur spent years scouting and observing the City, and he couldn’t stand trying to fit in with the culture as they always had in the past. He decided he was going to fight the steady increase of criminal activity. The long distance relationship with Azalea was beginning to strain as he told her of his plans, she didn’t want him to kill himself. By this time Azalea was a senior in college, and she decided to move to Hub to see him for the first time in three years and settle down to support and be with him. Their strict sense of justice overcame them and after months of preparing, they went out to the streets.

Oh yeah, the backward mage; he'd be perfect.
Though it's a little disappointing that you're the only one responding; maybe I'll give it a few weeks, see if anyone drifts by.
Knew he should have sent out a forum email about it

Let's maybe give it a week, if no one else has shown interest in here by next Friday (that'll be the 1st) then we can throw out an email blast and try to stir up some interest.
The First of November will be a good time to start stuff up too.

A two week posting rate and such will fit right in with my schedule and I've already got someone in mind for this.

I was thinking more Oceans any-number or Italian Job, though for the later one of us would have to betray the group and kill out most senior member.
Speaking as the most senior member; I am against this metaphor.

Re: Twist of Fate pre-planning
Snazzy indeed.
So back to the topic of the game for a second; I figure Players will write up their own origin story 'script'
I'm picturing something like three to five paragraphs averaging five sentences about where the hero started out, what got him into being a hero, and how he thwarted it, mentioning any important NPCs and such like Ma' Pa' Kent, Alfred, Tawny the Tiger etc.
Then I'll make a thread in the RP section where me & the player will play out their first adventure. I'll take the role of NPC & Antagonist, they'll play their character, things might go a little off script as I play characters as I read them (from the script) and when we get to the end I'll make some foreshadowy post about the main game.
This way I'll get a good feel for the players, their characters, their play style and the character's capabilities.
With regards to combat, because the posting rate is going to be deliberately low; there won't be a ton of hard core action and when there is I might just GM the battle based on the characters involved. You're fighting Condiment King, you'll win. You're fighting Darkseid, you'll run. You're fighting Johan Hex, you'll wonder why there's a cowboy and possibly get shot. J/k you'll exchange blows and then probably he'll run off to do whatever he's doing.

Re: Twist of Fate pre-planning
Alright, well any edits or refinement, criticism or comments are appreciated.
Arthur Origin
His father died in the military and his family had to move to Hub City while his mother struggled to find a job to get them out of the city. His girlfriend, Azalea Parker moved to be with him during his endeavor, living in the big city. When she arrived, what she found was that Arthur had become obsessed with the crimes around the city. Instead of trying to stop him, she began to help him, with a little help from Arthur himself, as he secretly use magical suggestions to keep her from voicing her opinion and instead doing the opposite.
During his escapades, they bumped into and worked with a very colorful variety of heroes and villains. Atlantians, Croatians, Amazons, and streetwise archers were all in the mix as they stopped gangsters, drug lords, king pins, and demon priests, until finally Steven "The Whale" Mandragora strangled Azalea to death and snapped her neck.
Her death was more than taxing on him, mentally, affecting his performance in casting spells. He and his mother eventually moved out of Hub City and into Gotham City. Whilst there, he attended a magic show that premiered Zatanna Zatara, where she slipped in backwards magic in her act. Where others thought everything was staged, Arthur knew better. He contacted her backstage and asked her to retrain him.
It took a little convincing to do, but eventually she agreed and took him under her wing. He always practiced with her on her time off, was never publicly seen with her, and he regained his confidence and mental stability. He learned new spells, tricks, and potion compounds, even different magical arts such as voodoo and dark magic.

This looks good I've started work on the first post of Arthur's Origin; I think I'll start you off in Gotham City rather than Hub, just to keep from getting caught up in my own mess.

Yeah, Hub City is more of a way to get an understanding from where Arthur is coming from. I didn't expect to go over everything that was supposed to happened in Hub.

Re: Twist of Fate pre-planning
Here's My basic Character sheet. Let me know what you think, i'll have the backstory/ origin story up soon.
- Spoiler:
Physical
Real name: Arnold Masters
Alias: Armus
Height: 6’2
Weight: 170
Hair: Dark brown
Eye color: very dark blue
Age: 25
Distinguishing traits: Has a pair of spell circles tattooed onto his palms and a large arcane tattoo down his back.
Alignment: Chaotic neutral
Attire
Head: Wears a mask over face that exposes only his eyes and top of head. A large blue stripe goes up the middle while there are two blue circles are around the right eye.
Torso: wears a protective black body shirt capable of protecting against knives and the like but is of little protection against firearms and more dangerous weapons.
Waist- down: durable pants with blue accents. Like shirt, provides limited protection against punctures and such.
Hands: wears wraps on fingers but palms are bare, exposing a spell circle tattooed onto each one.
Gear: throwing knives
Abilities:
Magic:
-He possesses a limited ability to turn invisible with a spell. However, he can only use this ability by itself, and cannot change forms while disguised.
-Armus also possesses the ability to shape shift. However, there are a few limitations; for one, he can only turn into something/ someone he has come into skin- on- skin contact with the spell circles on his hands. However this means he can copy every single individual physical trait of his target, though, including gender and species. Also, he can mix and match individual traits; for example, if he’s analyzed a man with green eyes and a separate one with blonde hair, he could turn into one individual with green eyes AND blonde hair. He cannot copy metaphysical ability, and while he can turn himself invisible while in a morph, he cannot alter his form while he is- he must become visible to transform again
Physical:
-He has a competent knowledge of physical ability, but isn’t an exceptional physical powerhouse- an opponent with military training or something similar would probably beat him in a flat- out fistfight.
-He is adept with his primary weapons, a set of throwing knives. Some have magical tags or symbols to give them special properties- for example, he has one that freeze a target on contact.
Bio:
To call Armus a moral car wreck would be a huge understatement. His mother was a high ranking acolyte in the cult of Blood, and his father could’ve been any one of ten different men he never met. Relatively ignored in favor of his mother’s obligations to the cult, he learned most of his moral decisions on the streets of Bludhaven, a place of relatively lackluster morals itself. Slowly developing into little more then a second rate punk, Sebastian Blood, head of the cult, began to take a shine to the spirited punk after meeting him once by chance, and offered to take him under his wing. Learning various spells and abilities from Brother Blood, he began to manifest a significant talent with stealth related spells in particular.
Unbeknownst to him, Blood was doing more then just teaching the boy- he was conditioning him to be one of his elite members. Once Armus had reached the age of 25, his entry into the highest level of the church was almost sealed. He only had to pass one simple test to ascend to the next rank; murder his own mother. When Armus refused to perform the ritual, he indirectly had insulted the cult. Earning not just the scorn of Blood and his hopelessly brainwashed mother but the entirety of the cult as well, he had no choice but to flee them….
