Re: Twist of Fate pre-planning
THE MISPLACED CRUSADER
- Spoiler:
Name: Osterna Von Helburgden
Age: 19 years old (dates back to 1455 A.D)
Alias: Sister Osterna, Sir Osterna of the German house of St. Mary
Appearance
Hair: Choppy, chin length black hair; an inch or so long on the back of her head. It tappers off longer in the front.
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 129lbs
Eyes: Icy blue
Skin: Ashen peach
Attire
Armor: Osterna’s is set in full plate armor, black and blessed by a bishop of the Catholic order. It encases her entire body from the neck down, though not particularly ornate it is slit into several different parts all connected to allow full mobility. Underneath said platting is q black linen shirt and pants, a thick doublet and woolen socks to prevent chaffing and keep her warm during the cold European winters. On her back is a thick, black cape, latched at her shoulders it extends down to her calves, splitting into three tails to emulate the wings and tail of a sparrow. The symbol of her order; a black cross surrounded by a white outline, is etched with care into the back of said cape.
Gear
Mörder: The sacred sword granted to Osterna by her order upon achieving knighthood. This blade was refashioned into a großes Messer (Great Knife) after it was retrieved from Egypt during a sacred mission centuries before. It is made of Nth metal and has the ability to disrupt magic. This blade has also been blessed by a bishop of the Teutonic Order. Whether or not this blessing augments the blade is debatable.
Abilities
Knight Training: Osterna has spent her entire life training to be a knight. She began as a page at a very young age, working with and for other knights and squires to learn not only combat but also the teachings and state of being one must have to succeed as a knight. Hardened by this training and all the tribulations of the old world, she is keen minded, very athletic and morally just; the very image of a righteous knight.
The following list below is a collection of skills expected of knights; thusly Osterna has varying degrees of proficiency in all of them- Horsemanship: Osterna as a page and squire has worked with horses the majority of her life, knowing her way around a horse; be it in mundane daily care or in the confusion of battle. She has been trained to maneuver herself and whatever equine beast she rides to easily run down footmen and other cavalry men. Osterna is actually quite adept at this and even had a favored steed she took everywhere with her.
- Archery: Most knights are trained in archery in their youth before knighthood. Osterna was no exception and was taught archery using a self-bow; a smaller bow made from a single piece of wood. Unfortunately, her aptitude lay with swordsmanship and she never achieved greatness with the bow. She is aware of the basics of it and could probably prove dangerous with a bow if the situation was amiable to such a strategy.
- Occult Knowledge: Hans was a man of education and knowledge; he believed that the true way to destroy evil was to understand it. He spent many years gathering knowledge on all forms of evil; witches, demons or beasts. In his later years he became the head scribe and librarian of the Bruderschaft des Lichts. He shared all this knowledge with Osterna, making sure she trained her mind as well as her body so that she might have a full advantage against the evil their brotherhood fought. Though moderately antiquated, Osterna’s knowledge of the occult is impressive to say the least and she can more often than not be relied on to puzzle out the weaknesses and predicted behaviorism of any creature or cult.
Disadvantages
Osterna is not particularly equipped for any sort of espionage. Sure, she can sneak around in a dark warehouse or steal papers from an office, but when it comes to the performance portion of gathering intel or sneaking into a gala or a business meeting she is quite ill-equipped. She is a blunt person and due to her beliefs and personality she could not disguise herself as a sexy waitress or any other role that would have her compromise her prudish, hard-core Catholic beliefs.
This isn't to say she could not act, but she would flat out refuse any questionable roles. Not to mention that her lack of modern knowledge would be more of a detriment to her tricking anyone with her acting.
Due to the era and way in which she was born/raised, Osterna is not particularly empathetic to those in suffering emotional trauma. She is blunt and harsh, and does not see a need to hide or sugar coat the truth from a victim merely to spare their feelings. She would do poorly at culling panic or easing someones mind.
All in all, her biggest disadvantage is her antiquated knowledge set. Though she posses a hard spirit and would not often be shocked or startled by the modern world, she has a lot to learn about it and more often than not will not know how to approach new scenarios. She will not know how to work any machinery that is unfamiliar to her time period, nor will she be able to apply modern first aid to anyone in need. She can not be relied on to flip the right switches or even hold an elevator on her own.
Origin Summary- Spoiler:
Osterna Von Helburgden was an orphan of the Gollub wars, born during the decline of the main branch of the Teutonic order. She was placed in a Marienburg cloister as a potential nun, being raised by the sisters there until a priest by the name of Hans Von Helburgden was reassigned to said church. Previously a member of a sacred sect of the Teutonic order, Hans had attempted to retire to a more mundane position in the clergy during the decline of the Brotherhood.
An unexpected friendship was forged between Osterna and Hans, who saw in Osterna a deep devotion to god and an intense desire to do right. Her piety and fierce desire to protect the church was something Hans wished to cultivate and so he began to write to the Bruderschaft des Lichts about her.
Female members were not often heard of and for three years Hans pushed via letters to the current head knight; Bransch Kreugne, for Osterna to be accepted into the Page ranks. Eventually, Hans received a letter of tentative acceptance, offering him a chance to bring the girl to the sects headquarters in order for her to be tested. Both Osterna and Hans had to overcome the initial skepticism they were met with, but she eventually was accepted for training.
Osterna worked diligently and tirelessly amongst the other pages, grateful to the order and finding a meaning in life she had previously lacked. She quickly rose through the ranks, achieving squire-hood at the age of 13; serving as a scribe for Hans who rejoined so that he could watch over his young friend, and an apprentice to the Knight Errant Grunsche. She was trained in combat and taught to read and write Italian, German and Saxon English.
Upon achieving knighthood, Osterna took Hans name and was brought into the Bruderschaft des Licht as a Knight Errant. The Bruderschaft des Licht was a sub-sect within the order dedicated to combating abominations of the supernatural variety. Their crusade was against demons, ghosts, cultists and any other such unholy abominations.
A few years after being knighted, Osterna was paired with a veteran Knight; Sir Bernardo Catus. They were sent to the Vatican to supplement the cities knight populace. During their stay they were asked to investigate a cult that had been gaining followers and increasing in activity along the eastern coast of Italy.
After some moderate investigating (the cultists didn’t try to hide their activities) Bernardo and Osterna tracked them down and caught them in the middle of a ritual in which they were attempting to summon a physical manifestation of the god Saturn (Known in Greece as Cronus).
The cultists were not particularly talented and in truth were more surprised their ritual was actually working than that they were caught by Catholic Knights. As the head cultist tried desperately to finish their summoning; in hopes that Saturn would aid them against the knights, Osterna disrupted the rite and became a victim to the invoked temporal magics.
Being flung forward in time, Osterna found herself in modern day Zandia.- Horsemanship: Osterna as a page and squire has worked with horses the majority of her life, knowing her way around a horse; be it in mundane daily care or in the confusion of battle. She has been trained to maneuver herself and whatever equine beast she rides to easily run down footmen and other cavalry men. Osterna is actually quite adept at this and even had a favored steed she took everywhere with her.

Re: Twist of Fate pre-planning
Updated character sheet.
Arthur
- Spoiler:
- “Justice is a concept everyone has, everyone wants, but few fight for.”Name: Arthur James Fox
Alias: None
Age: 27
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 160lbs
Hair: Short Brown
Skin: White
Eyes: Blue
Alignment: Good
Attire: Business casual
Ethnicity: British
Race: Homo Magi
Abilities
Backwards Magic
Arthur can perform a variety of offensive backwards-magic spells. They range from binding, shocks, sensations, and suggestions. All spells last for five seconds at the most, shocks only last for one second, suggestions can be resisted if the holder of the mind is strong enough; backwards-magic spells must be pronounced clearly in order for the spell to take effect, a gag will effectively halt any of these spells. Arthur must also gesture with his hands and body in the direction in which he wound like to cast the spell; otherwise the spell would have little or no effect. He must have a decent amount of focus when casting it upon a foe and must be at least fifteen feet in range for the spell to be effective. The spell must not exceed five syllables, otherwise the spell backfires and Arthur will be incapacitated in casting all spells for one hour at the least.
Physical Abilities
Above Average Stamina
Arthur has an above level endurance. He is physically fit, strong, and capable, but not to superhuman ranks.
Mental Abilities
Advanced Mental Concentration
Because of the nature of his abilities, Arthur has a keen sense of mental stabilization. He can be malnourished for three days and maintain a healthy mental state of mind, despite how his physical health diminishes. Trauma or physical abuse will affect his ability of concentration.
Tools
Magically Enchanted Wand
A normal ash wood stick, about a foot long, that has been enchanted by Zatanna. Arthur can focus all his magic through his wand. It's also a form of focus that helps him cast his spells more efficiently. Initially given to him to help him regain his magical skill of concentration. He uses it to aid him, in a way a cripple uses a crutch.
9mm Handgun
The fifteen round M9 rests on Arthur’s right hip. It weighs around 2.5 lbs and is only used for emergencies. His girlfriend Azalea purchased it for him to guard him in case anything was to happen. He only carries it around to ease her paranoia and has no intent on ever using it.
Kevlar Vest
Bulletproof, the vest only covers his front and back, but not his sides. Arthur also uses it to store and deploy other offensive attacks.
Weakness
Higher-leveled Magics
Because Arthur still has much to learn about his powers as a homo magi, if he fights someone who is more experienced in magic than he, it’s impossible for him to win the battle.
Backfire
All of Arthur’s spells can backfire at any moment if improperly cast, even if it was a slight imperfection and can have the opposite effect of what he was aiming for. Black magic backfires drain both life force and blood.
Mnemonic Incantation and Gesture Disability
If for whatever reason Arthur cannot speak or make a magical gesture by being gagged or bound, he cannot cast any spells.
Counter magic
Spells cast as counter magic disable Arthur for one hour leaving him vulnerable to all attacks.
Origin
Arthur James Fox was born and raised in a family of homo magi, they practiced their art and continued to stay in the world and live as normal human beings. Arthur’s father joined the army before he was born to support the family only as a recruitment officer for the US Marine Corps. Arthur became best friends with Azalea Parker who was the daughter of a coworker of his father. Arthur enjoyed performing magic for Azalea. He would continue to learn as much as he can about worldly magic tricks and even go to magic shows trying to see new tricks up and coming stage performance magic humans can do.
In their teen years became romantically involved and both of their fathers went out for a European Tour of Duty. Arthur’s father never came back, his unit was attacked by an unidentified meta-human who was believed to be looking for Justice League Members in Kasina. The military death gratuity didn’t last Fox’s family for very long and they needed to move to survive, in this case, they moved to Hub City. Arthur’s mother found a job as a waitress, and Arthur schooled himself after familiarizing himself with the neighborhood.
Arthur spent years scouting and observing the City, and he couldn’t stand trying to fit in with the culture as they always had in the past. He decided he was going to fight the steady increase of criminal activity. The long distance relationship with Azalea was beginning to strain as he told her of his plans, she didn’t want him to kill himself. By this time Azalea was a senior in college, and she decided to move to Hub to see him for the first time in three years and settle down to support and be with him. Their strict sense of justice overcame them and after months of preparing, they went out to the streets.
They soon teamed with a colorful spectrum of characters on their escapades including a magic endowed Croatian named Misji and her familiar: Esiasch. A hotheaded and often irrational Atlantian, Rhode. Androdameia, the Amazon who had fell victim of a human trafficking crime and had to seek means of returning to her home, and a streetwise modern day Robin Hood named William. The team worked together in bringing down syndicates of crime, putting drug lords behind bars, and stunting devil worshipping cults in resurrecting demons. One day, in a brawl between the enormous Steven "The Whale" Mandragora, he strangled Azalea to death and snapped her neck in front of Arthur.
Arthur spent years recovering from the incident mentally, but he could no longer perform magic the way he use to because of his mental scars. He and his mother eventually moved out of Hub City and into New Gotham, the northern parts of the city built after the earthquake. There he began seeing a new kind of injustice in the streets.
Arthur eventually moved out and got a part time job as a salesman in insurance and part time in a magic studio, moving into the heart of the city in his early 20's. The studio eventually held a piece for a well known magician: Zatanna Zatara. In her act she used actual magic, and backwards magic. Where the audience didn't pick up on, he knew exactly what it was. She too was a Homo Magi.
After the show, Arthur approached her backstage and revealed to her he was one of her and he requested to train with her so he could strengthen his magical abilities.
Hesitant at first, she agreed to help Arthur. Zatanna Taught him everything he knew once again, and continued his classes and taught him new abilities including new spells, voodoo, and black magic. He grew in the courses she put Arthur through, and grew a strong platonic relationship with her.

Re: Twist of Fate pre-planning
Nice work on the new sheet; I was actually writing up Arhtur’s origin intro as if he was seventeen, since that’s what the other sheet said…
One thing that I would like to maybe see changed still is to have the optic camo replaced by something a little less tech-y and a little more magical; it can basically work the exact same just call it something like a ‘Glamour-Coat’ rather than Optic Camo.
Maybe also thin out the magical powers; anything below Slight of Hand I could do without.
And while I have all your sheets here like this all nice and neat a few general notes:
I’d like to hear more about the limitations on Arnold’s powers; does his shapeshifting conceal his tattoos? His clothes?
I also don’t see much on where he got his powers; Brother Blood’s not really much of a magical guy, depending on the incarnation he’s either a dude who uses his followers to smuggle/deal arms, or a power-vampire who couldn’t conjure a pizza without biting someone who already knew how to do that.
Similarly could we maybe call out some specifics in Osterna’s ‘Knight Training,’ I assume she knows how to swing a sword/wear armor, but does that training extend to riding a horse? Mounted Archery? Military Tactics?
I’d also like to know where Arthur got some of his equipment, and/or which items of his equipment/abilities he (or anyone else for that matter) is expecting/wanting to start of their origin story with; for example could Arthur obtain his Magically Enchanted Wand over the course of his origin story? Possibly alongside his Glamour Coat?
And while I’m asking questions I have a less technically and more… erudite question? Bleh that sounds too elitist but whatever.
Ahem.
What would you say is Arnold/Osterna/Arthur’s greatest deficiency?
I don’t mean things like; Arnold’s moral compass points whichever way the wind blows, or Osterna lacks any real means of ranged combat. What I’m looking for here is more like… What is something that your character would be either utterly unqualified for, or something that your character would really have to rely on the other characters/NPC/other people for in the course of either their general day to day or their specific career.
Something like, ‘Osterna is not a very empathetic person, she views herself as a warrior first and foremost; as such should she find herself in a situation where she would have to console or comfort someone, she would be both uncomfortable and ineffective, and may even make matters worse.’
I think I’d like answers to look something like that. “The problem, the source of the problem, and a situation where the problem could impede/obstruct the character’s progress.”

Re: Twist of Fate pre-planning
Alright, so I did some research and wrote down a sub-list in Osterna's abilities about different aspects of her knight training. There are a thousand and one different things that knights had to know so I decided to spare you and only go with the most important physical aspects of it.
Chivalry is not something I consider to be a particularly important detail.
Now, I had no trouble thinking of what Osterna is not qualified to handle and my only question would be---Would you like this information jotted down as a side note in the character sheet to keep it somewhere easy to reference, or would a simple post on here suffice?
I think I would like to put it on the sheet just so I have it somewhere easy to access, but if you have a preference Dec, I would gladly adhere to it.

Re: Twist of Fate pre-planning
Actually, I assumed his optic camo from his father's old gear, I'm unsure of any other real way to get it, or to get a glamour cloak unless it's just lying around Zatanna's stuff of things. He also got his kevlar vest from his father's chest of war memorabilia.
At any rate, I had the idea that Zatanna would be training Arthur when she realized he needed a way to focus his magic, his concentration was off and a magically enchanted wand help him in casting since he needs gestures to cast spells.
Arthur has trust issues when it comes to going into battle with others. He doesn't rely on his team mates to make the right choices. He gets this way because of how his girlfriend died, he may trust others off the battlefield, but otherwise, he gets paranoid another may die because of him.

Re: Twist of Fate pre-planning
Kevlar vests are something I can see sitting around in an old soldier's war chest; but Optic Camo seems like something that the military might notice is missing.
Zatanna is actually ridiculously powerful, if she wanted to get Arthur a glamour cloak all she'd have to do is say "teG ruhtrA a ruomalg kaolc" and boom. Seriously, she flayed Lobo from head to toe just by saying "niks mih evila"
And yes I would like these questions answered in the Character Sheets just so I can quickly reference them; but I'd also like a new message because I get an email anytime someone responds to this thread.
Question regarding Arthur; does he not trust other people, or does he not trust himself to work with them without getting them killed?

Re: Twist of Fate pre-planning
Again, it isn't that Arthur doesn't trust people, its just when it comes to battle does he have a hard time believing others can hold their own in a fight; because of that he gets over protective.
Arthur believes he's more than capable of handling situations on his own, but when team players get in the mix, he's doesn't think they can survive. Kind of like how Batman felt when Jason died.
I suppose I can just add the cloak in.

Re: Twist of Fate pre-planning
Putting this last bit of information down here.
Osterna has a few things that would deem her useless and very reliant on more appropriate personalities/people.
(( If this isn't exactly what you're looking for Dec, just tell me so~))
Also, new Osterna design....!

Re: Twist of Fate pre-planning
I did some more work on Arnold's sheet, let me know what you think and if i'm more on the money this time.
- Spoiler:
Physical
Real name: Arnold Masters
Height: 6’2
Weight: 170
Hair: Dark brown
Eye color: very dark blue
Age: 25
Distinguishing traits: a large arcane tattoo down his back.
Alignment: Chaotic neutral
Character:
Strengths: He is stubborn and doesn’t give up, even if he doesn’t always have the best of intentions. While his emotional walls are probably miles high, anybody he’d let thorough them would no doubt find a devoted partner in crime. If not a rather unrefined one at that.
Weaknesses: To put it bluntly, he’s an asshole- it wouldn’t be unlike him to be just downright insensitive towards his fellow team members, all too happy to point out their shortcomings and mistakes to point of him seemingly being just downright unkind at times. He’s not COMPLETELY insensitive, but to get any kind of sympathetic or otherwise kind reaction out of him for anybody would take some serious, significant work.
Attire
Torso: wears a protective black body shirt capable of protecting against knives and the like but is of little protection against firearms and more dangerous weapons. Over this, he wars a long, black jacket with an asymmetrical blue design.
Waist- down: durable pants with blue accents. Like shirt, provides limited protection against punctures and such.
Hands: wears wraps on fingers but palms are bare, exposing a spell circle tattooed onto each one.
Gear: throwing knives
Abilities:
Metaphysical:
-He possesses a limited ability to turn invisible. However, he can only use this ability by itself, and cannot change forms while disguised.
-Armus also possesses the ability to shape shift. However, there are a few limitations; for one, he can only turn into something/ someone he has come into skin- on- skin contact with. However this means he can copy every single individual physical trait of his target, though, including gender and species. Also, he can mix and match individual traits; for example, if he’s analyzed a man with green eyes and a separate one with blonde hair, he could turn into one individual with green eyes AND blonde hair. He cannot copy metaphysical abilities, and while he can turn himself invisible while in a morph, he cannot alter his form while he is- he must become visible to transform again. He cannot copy clothes either- when changing forms, he will remain in what he was wearing. Also, his own personal traits are hidden, covering up his tattoos when he’s in a morph.
-Drawback: Both cloaking and disguising himself require conscious attention, so falling asleep, being drugged, etc. will cause his disguises to fail
-He has a limited amount of magical talent
Physical:
-He has a competent knowledge of physical ability, but isn’t an exceptional physical powerhouse- an opponent with military training or something similar would probably beat him in a flat- out fistfight. He prefers stealth and sneaky tactics to get a job done, with which he is far more proficient.
-He is adept with his primary weapons, a set of throwing knives. Some have magical tags or symbols to give them special properties- for example, he has one that freeze a target on contact.
Bio:
To call Armus a moral car wreck would be a huge understatement. His mother was a high ranking acolyte in the cult of Blood, and his father was a metahuman con- artist, using his powers to swindle a fortune over his lifetime. Due to his mother’s unhealthy attachment to the church, he spent most of his time with his father, learning from a young age that he possessed his father’s gifts. He learned how to shapeshift and turn invisible before he was twelve, and by the time he was fifteen was helping his father with his heists.
However, by the time he had hit the age of eighteen, his mother began to show keen interest in him all of a sudden, and began to introduce him slowly into the cult of Trigon. Reveling in the moral abandon he could observe with the cult, he delved into their morally decrepit world. As he aged, Brother Blood took a particular liking to Arnold, whom had earned the nickname Armus. Through a variety of misdeeds most people would come to regret, he had impressed Blood to the point that he was offered a position of high honor within the cult as one of their heads. He just had to pass one simple test; murder his own father. However, Arnold blatantly refused to perform the ritual and kill the man whom had practically raised him, and instead helped his father escape.
Insulted and outraged by his refusal, Brother Blood and Arnold’s own mother literally wanted blood for his perceived transgressions and he was cast out of the cult and has since been a subject of particular hatred from them.
